The Weekend PBR Preview

The 2019 PBR season kicks into top gear this weekend with the resumption of the Unleash the Beast tour in New York City, New York.

The worlds best bull riders will contest the first PBR Major of the year, squaring off against a rank pen of bucking bulls over three nights of competition inside the worlds most famous arena, Madison Square Garden.

Coonamble’s Nathan Burtenshaw will be the lone Australian rider in action at the Monster Energy Buck Off at The Garden.

Burtenshaw finished the 2018 PBR Season in 27th place and kicked off his 2019 campaign with a fifth-place finish in Melbourne back in November.

Lachlan Richardson will sit out the first event of the new year with an ankle injury he sustained at the Canadian Finals in November.

Richardson told PBR’s Justin Felisko in this week’s ‘Behind the Chutes’ that he is taking things week-to-week. Hopefully, the injury won’t hold him back for too long, and he can get a few premier series events under his belt before the PBR’s Global Cup in Arlington which is just five weeks away.

Aaron Kleier, the 2018 PBR Australia champion and current World No. 1 was named as an alternate for the event but turned down the opportunity to ride in New York.

Elsewhere, the PBR Velocity Tour heads to California for the Oakland Classic while the Touring Pro Division will hold a doubleheader inside Cowtown Coliseum at the Fort Worth Stockyards in Texas. There are no Aussie riders entered for either of the minor league events.

Monster Energy Buck Off at The Garden Round 1 Preview

Burtenshaw will face Zorro from Gene Owen and Jane Clark. Zorro has only been covered once in his sixteen PBR outs. Eduardo Aparecido was 85.5 points in Austin late in the 2018 season however the bull scores indicate that the bull didn’t have his strongest day.

Zorro has averaged 42.89 points in his seven premier series performances, regularly turning back to the right at a high rate of speed. He has been marked as high as 45-point, attaining the mark twice at the Touring Pro level during the summer run last year.

Monster Energy Buck Off at The Garden Round 2 Preview

In Round 2, Burtenshaw has drawn Really Western from Curt Check Bucking Bulls.

This bull is having his first PBR out and I have not been able to track down any recent vision from the Practice Pen on Social Media. There is a video from 2016 when then bull was bucked as a yearling, but I don’t think we can take much from that video.

Monster Energy Buck Off at The Garden Round 3 Preview

The Punisher from Bill Henson and Gene Owen will be Burtenshaw’s opponent in Round 3.

This bull has not been ridden in almost 12 months and he seems to have a nasty habit of hipping himself as he leaves the chutes. Ezekiel Mitchell had some chute troubles with The Punisher in Round 1 and was down in quick time.

I saw this bull at the Velocity Finals last season where he put up 43-points against Reece Cates in just a couple of seconds. He likes to throw his head around and looks pretty wild with his usual trip turning back to the left.

Updates

I will have updates via Social Media across the Weekend plus, a full Wrap-up on ridetherage.com after the dust settles on Monday.
